The practical side of teaching is still being done in a traditional method; the theory is taken care of by academically trained dancers and professors. The university curriculum has added newer theoretical dimensions to the traditional practical training. The students are systematically taught the shastric sanctio and basis of extant dance practice – an aspect which is of utmost importance if the purity of dance practice is to be maintained and comprehended, but which is today absent from the traditional method of training. At the post-graduate level, the students take comparative theory papers on aesthetics, world theatrical etc. and gain teaching experience. They also take up topics for research /investigation. Most importantly the students are systematically taught to choreograph items on traditional framework.

Over the years, Nalanda college has created an exceptionally well trained, highly qualified and scholarly generation of dancers who are not only proficient performers but also excellent theoreticians, analysers and teachers. Due to the thorough grounding that they receive in both practical and theoretical aspects of classical dancing as also in the technique of teaching the Nalanda students are highly regarded as teachers also.Since 1975 every year Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya students have been winning the National Scholarship for classical dancing given by the Dept. of Culture, Govt. of India.

One of the most revolutionary contribution of Nalanda has been the introduction of the Post Graduate Diploma in Dance (Dance and Fitness) of one year of the University of Mumbai.
